Established in 1912 in Sycamore, Illinois, by Paul A. Nehring, Nehring Electrical Works, now located in DeKalb, Illinois, is the most experienced and longest continuous running wire mill in the Midwest. We are one of the few U.S.-based companies manufacturing both copper and aluminum conductors. Since 1912, Nehring has been serving the utility, electrical distribution, and telecommunication markets with a broad offering of quality products, superior customer service, prompt response, and short lead-lead times.

Paul A. Nehring started the Nehring Insulated Wire Company in Sycamore, IL. He was an inventive genius and invented many of the machines used for covering copper with braided cotton.

1916-1936
Nehring Insulated Wire Company becomes Nehring Electrical Works and moves to a leased building on East Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, IL. A factory on East Lincoln Highway is purchased for the production of fine copper wire and Nehring builds a new factory on Locust Street where large cable will be manufactured. Production quadruples during these years to 1,600,000 lbs. of wire and cable per month.

A modernistic office is built on the corner of Locust and Ninth Streets. Nehring begins drawing aluminum wire for making steel reinforced cable for transmission lines used for the distrbution of power.

Paul A. Nehring is still Owner/President. His son Paul M. Nehring is Vice President. Nehring employs 150 people and produces 50 million lbs of wire and cable annually, making it one of the largest manufacturers of its product in the Midwest.

1974-1980
Paul A. Nehring, founder, dies at the age of 91 in February 1974. The Nehring family sells the company to an investment group that subsequently sells Nehring Electrical Works to Coleman Cable Company.

Raymond C. Hott, employed by Coleman Cable Company, is assigned to the DeKalb facility as President.

1995
Nehring Electrical Works is purchased by a private partnership group which still owns the company today.

Nehring adds a twisting line capable of producing multi-conductor copper and aluminum cables.

2000-2011
Nehring completes an $8 million expansion to its manufacturing facility, significantly increasing production capacity for aluminum transmission and distribution conductors. A tempering oven is added to allow production and distribution of aluminum alloy wire and cables and ACSS conductors. A de-glaring line is also added. Nehring continues to add new machines to increase capacity on aluminum conductors.

Nehring celebrates 100 years of uninterrupted production! It’s the oldest independent company of its kind.

Nehring continues to increase capacity by adding 2 aluminum drawing lines, 4 aluminum stranding lines, 1 copper stranding line, and a new in-line annealing copper drawing line. Plans to expand are ongoing.
